HLK Host ‘Patenting AI at the EPO Masterclass’ at the Royal Society of Chemistry

On 16th June, Haseltine Lake Kemper (HLK) hosted its first in person event post-pandemic. The half-day masterclass was held in the spectacular surroundings of the Royal Society of Chemistry in the heart of London, on a gloriously sunny afternoon.

The practical masterclass explored various aspects of patenting AI at the European Patent Office (EPO). Nine HLK attorneys attended the event: Caroline Day, Frances Wilding, Kimberley Bayliss, Joanne Addison and Greg Ward spoke at the masterclass, whilst David Lewin, Andrew Flaxman, Nina Szamocki-Hoffman and Grace Wood were also in attendance. We were delighted to welcome former Principal Director, Telecommunications and Computers Technology and then COO of the EPO, Grant Philpott, and former Director, Patent Granting Process at the EPO, Yannis Skoulikaris, as guest speakers. The masterclass began with and EPO practice review for AI with Caroline Day, who then led a practical case study alongside Yannis Skoulikaris in a session designed for sharing experiences amongst attendees. This session was followed by a fireside chat with Frances Wilding and Grant Philpott who then handed over to Kimberley Bayliss and Joanne Addison for an AI cross-over session which discussed applications in the sectors of Life Sciences and Chemistry. In the final session, Greg Ward explored Software Patents and the UPC.The Masterclass was followed by HLK’s Summer reception at our new nearby London office, where guests enjoyed the opportunity to relax and network with light refreshments in the sun.Thank you to everyone who attended the masterclass and we hope to see you at more HLK events, both online and in-person in the future.
