Gemma Robin

As a partner in our AI team, Gemma handles complex AI subject matter with a particular focus on explainability, safety, and verification of AI models. Gemma has extensive experience in drafting and prosecuting patent applications in the fields of Reinforcement Learning (including Safe RL), Transfer Learning, and Distributed Learning, as well as applications of probabilistic graphical models, control theory and optimisation.

Lisa is a partner in our AI team who is notable for the strong relationships that she establishes with the inventors and clients that she works with. Many of these return time after time, asking for Lisa to handle their work.
Lisa has a wealth of experience in drafting and prosecuting patent applications in the field of AI, including those relating to supervised learning (classification, regression, and forecasting), semi-supervised learning, unsupervised learning (clustering, and dimensionality reduction), reinforcement learning, and explainable AI.

Caroline is a former coder, now partner in the AI team, who has followed AI’s progression from expert systems, through ‘big data’ right up to the present day. She enjoys the puzzle of writing patent applications for AI inventions at a time when the law and practice is yet to fully crystallise, actively seeking to build drafting strategies and practices to future-proof applications written now, but to be examined and tested in the years to come.

Frances is a partner in our AI team who is highly regarded for her instinctive ability to craft simple, commercially-focussed solutions to complex problems. Frances has built up significant experience in drafting and prosecuting Machine Learning and other algorithm/software patent applications worldwide, but primarily in Europe and the US, focussing on Bioinformatics, CNNs/Deep Learning, simulations, data centres, cloud and Internet of Things inventions and business-related software.

Whilst working at HLK Olivia has developed a particular passion for drafting and prosecuting machine learning related inventions.
Olivia’s experience in drafting AI related applications includes those directed to supervised learning, unsupervised learning, graph neural networks, and multi-task learning (to name but a few), and she also has experience in the overlap of the use of these AI techniques in cloud environments. The sheer number and variety of applications that Olivia has now drafted and prosecuted in this area has afforded her with a deep understanding of the subtle issues involved in this technology, and she is confident in handling the new concepts and innovation that so often arise in this rapidly evolving field.

Isobel leads the life sciences and biotechnology team at HLK and brings her considerable experience of patenting in the biotechnology, healthcare and precision medicine space to the AI team’s Bioinformatics projects. Joanne Addison

Jo works in the chemistry and life sciences team at HLK and brings her extensive experience of drafting and prosecuting European patent applications in chemistry and materials fields to the AI team. Jo has been working within the AI team to consider how lessons learnt from drafting and prosecuting patent applications in chemistry fields can be applied to writing patent applications for AI, as well as the role AI plays in chemistry and life sciences inventions that employ AI to some extent and how best to draft applications relating to such inventions.
Greg Ward

Greg’s patent drafting and prosecution experience encompasses a broad range of AI subject matter, from more theoretical AI concepts to the application of AI to complex physical systems. He is recognised by both clients and colleagues as an expert in the fields of electronics and telecommunications, and his drafting work has a particular focus on the intersection of AI and telecommunications technologies.

HLK’s FemTech team is comprised of a dedicated group of experienced IP professionals who have a specific interest in innovation for women, and are keen to play a part in addressing the disparity in resources and innovation directed to the advancement of women’s health.
Electronic systems & circuits team
Our Electronic systems and circuits team has extensive expertise across a range of electronics technologies, such as ultra low-power sensing systems, audio and RF electronics, vehicle electrification and high voltage electricity generation and distribution systems.
Green tech team
HLK’s Green tech team offers extensive experience and expertise in protecting innovations in the environmental sector. Members of the team have substantial technical expertise in a wide range of technological fields, including low carbon energies, energy storage, recycling technologies and alternative plastics.
