Our history
Today, HLK is a global cooperation combining Haseltine Lake Kempner LLP and HL Kempner Partnerschaft mbB, providing a full suite of IP services advising across the entire IPR Lifespan™ and in all technical and scientific disciplines.
Our origins can be traced back to 1850, after Dr George Haseltine and Mr William Robert Lake combined their respective patent agencies to form Haseltine, Lake and Co., a partnership of consulting engineers and patent agents, based in London.
Since 1850, the firm has dealt exclusively with intellectual property protection, building a strong international reputation for top quality advice across a wide range of technologies and industry sectors working with some of the most exciting and forward-thinking businesses and organisations in the world.
In 2019 Haseltine Lake merged with Kempner & Partners, to create Haseltine Lake Kempner LLP. The merger brought two of Europe’s leading specialist IP firms together to form a new, modern and progressive IP powerhouse.
By bringing together these two successful practices, with some of the best IP practitioners within their fields, the firm is able to provide clients with a full suite of legal, patent and trade mark services. It is rare to have this combination under one roof in the UK and in Europe.
Whilst the firm has had an office in Munich since 1978, HL Kempner Partnerschaft mbB was formed in 2019 to fulfil legal requirements and to continue our growth in Germany and wider Europe.
HL Renewals LLP is a wholly owned subsidiary of Haseltine Lake Kempner LLP, and undertakes the renewal of our clients’ granted IP rights, including patents, trade marks, designs and utility models. We have been offering this service since our inception in 1850.
2025 marks the firm’s 175th anniversary. As part of this celebration, we are participating in a range of charitable and community activities, including volunteering, fundraising challenges, charity donations, supporting entrepreneurs in low-income countries and more. You can find out more on our 175th anniversary page.
