Members of the team have substantial technical expertise in a wide range of technological fields, including low carbon energies, energy storage, recycling technologies and alternative plastics.

The team has a wealth of experience across the entire patent lifecycle, including drafting, prosecution and enforcement. We also offer expert knowledge on opportunities made available for applicants pursuing protection for environmental technologies, both in the UK and abroad. This in-depth understanding of prosecuting green technologies allows our team to support clients in achieving patent protection tailored to their individual needs.

Andrew Dowling

Andrew Dowling

UK and European Patent Attorney | UPC Representative

Andrew completed his PhD at the Hopkinson Energy Laboratory in the Engineering Department at Cambridge University. Through this, Andrew gained a broad knowledge of thermodynamics and fluid dynamics and their application to clean energy technologies.  As a patent attorney, Andrew has worked on inventions relating to solar, wind and tidal power generation for large- and small-scale applications. Andrew also has experience of energy storage and smart power management technologies.

Equally comfortable representing universities, SMEs or larger corporate clients, Andrew particularly enjoys providing strategic advice relevant to a client’s commercial context. Over the years, Andrew has drafted hundreds of patent specifications over a wide range of technologies. Many of these patents have granted and become integral parts of our clients’ successful IP strategies. Andrew’s patent practice includes applications in a large number of countries, and he is particularly adept at managing patent portfolios across many jurisdictions.

Greg Ward

Greg Ward

Greg is a Partner in our Electronics & Communications team. He is recognised by both clients and colleagues as an expert in the fields of electronics and telecommunications, who brings a deep level of technical background knowledge to his work in the drafting and prosecution of patents. His drafting and prosecution practice spans a diverse range of technologies, including semiconductor and microelectromechanical devices, sensing equipment and techniques, and automotive technologies. His breadth of knowledge is particularly useful in the prosecution of applications which span several fields of technology, for example, inventions which include electrical and engineering elements. Greg’s practice encompasses a wide range of green technologies, with a particular focus on low carbon energy generation and storage techniques.

Ari Rollason

UK and European Patent Attorney

Ari is a trainee patent attorney in our Electronics & Communications team. He graduated with a First in Physics from Imperial College London, with a thesis on the possible uses of nanotubes in semiconductor devices. He works with clients ranging from SMEs and universities to multinationals in various aspects of the patent process, including drafting and prosecuting patent applications, and advising on freedom-to-operate and infringement issues. Ari is particularly passionate about low carbon energy generation, on which he has published multiple articles as part of the HLK “Green Series”.

Stephan Schultes

Stephan has combined his knowledge gained from his PhD in organic photovoltaics with his professional experience to help PV start-ups navigate the complexities of IP. He has also advised cleantech companies working in areas such as water desalination, wind energy, and energy storage. He provides practical advice on all aspects of patent and other IP rights, from developing an initial IP strategy through to post-grant proceedings. He also has extensive experience advising on validity and infringement matters.

Isobel Finnie

Isobel Finnie

Isobel is a Partner in our Chemistry and Life Sciences team with particular expertise in life sciences and biotechnology innovation. Her multi-disciplinary practice embraces a wide variety of life science technologies, especially in the fields of biotechnology and biochemistry and her practice encompasses green technologies such as more sustainable foods, biofuels and uses of microorganisms in treating waste waters from anything from industrial plants to sewage.

Jo is a Senior Associate in HLK’s Chemistry and Life Sciences team and works within our Materials Group. She is passionate about green technology and making a positive environmental impact inside and outside of work. Jo has been working to reduce her family’s environmental impact for many years. As a patent attorney, Jo works on inventions such as fabrics to provide wind turbine blades with improved efficiency, insulation materials, fuel cell technology, radiovoltaics, and energy generation from renewable resources.

Harriet is an Associate in HLK’s Chemistry and Life Sciences team, specialising in materials science. She has a keen interest in green technologies, both professionally and personally, and has advised clients in numerous clean tech industries. This has included green building materials, insulation, battery and fuel cell technology. On the legal side, Harriet has extensive experience in EPO oppositions, as well as helping clients with filing strategies, drafting and prosecution of their patent applications.

Marie-Alexis Mezin

Trainee Patent Attorney

Marie-Alexis is a trainee patent attorney in HLK’s Electronics & Communications team. A graduate of École Polytechnique with a degree in mathematics and physics with experience in computer science, Marie-Alexis believes in the power of multidisciplinary approaches to advancing technologies of tomorrow, especially within Green Tech. With her diverse international and multilingual background, Marie-Alexis is keen to collaborate with a broad swath of innovators seeking to tackle one of the world’s most pressing challenges: climate change.
