About Thomas

Thomas has always been greatly interested in the applications of science in the modern world, an interest that has only grown whilst planning and conducting experiments in the laboratory. This naturally led to him seeking a career as a patent attorney, where his enthusiasm for problem-solving and understanding technology at the frontiers of science could continue to develop.

Thomas graduated from the University of Durham in 2022 with a Master’s degree in Physics, having achieved First Class honours. He studied a broad range of topics including astronomy and condensed matter physics and was awarded the Durham Physics Award for Outstanding Achievement in 2019.

His Master’s research project focused on developing techniques to detect geostationary satellites from image data with increased sensitivity and reliability. During his project, Thomas gained an expertise in building computer algorithms that could identify satellites based on the linear trajectory of their apparent motion on a sequence of images of space captured by a camera on Earth.

Whilst at university, he encouraged secondary school students to pursue a study of science by acting as an ambassador for his university during open days and summer schools and by tutoring students in STEM subjects.

Since joining HLK in 2022, Thomas has been a part of the Electronics & Communications team and has gained experience in drafting and prosecuting a variety of UK and European patent applications in the telecommunications sector.
