About Michael

Michael joined HLK and qualified as a trade mark and design attorney in 2010. His experience spans a wide range of UK, European and overseas trade mark matters, including clearance searching, strategic advice in relation to contentious proceedings and arguing the case for registrability of trade marks. Michael works for leading businesses across a variety of industry sectors, including luxury watches, industrial minerals and steam engineering.

Michael also leads the firm’s Designs Group and regularly advises clients on registered and unregistered design matters. He is particularly experienced in devising strategies to clear product designs for use, as well in developing effective protection strategies for product designs, whether for consumer products, technical products or graphical user interfaces.

Fluent in German, conversational in Spanish and with basic competence in Mandarin, Michael spent a year living in Munich and studying at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität as part of his degree course. During his time with HLK he has also completed two secondments, one to the in-house trade mark department of a large US corporation and one to a leading intellectual property law firm in Guangzhou, China.

Michael is a member of CITMA (the Chartered Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys), FICPI (the International Federation of Intellectual Property Attorneys) and an associate member of CIPA (the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys). He sits on the Design committees for FICPI and CIPA and is a regular speaker on subjects relating to both trade marks and designs.
