European Patent Office

The ability of our attorneys to simultaneously provide an in-depth understanding of our clients’ needs, as well as constant high quality work, was also recognised across a range of technical and scientific disciplines. Based in our Munich office, James Ward once again ranked as an expert in his field. This year, James was highlighted in both the EPO rankings and the German rankings for prosecution and nullity. IAM remarked on James’ “extensive experience in oppositions and appeals involving everything from 3D printing to DVD technologies, firefighter safety and television programme guides.” Also gaining recognition , Simon Rees, Global Head of Client Services and Partner in the Tech team at HLK, was identified as “one of the most creative patent attorneys practising before the EPO”, as he was listed in the UK prosecution rankings.

From our Chemistry and Life Sciences team, Alex Rogers and David Hammond were recommended for their excellent skillsets in prosecution. Alex was acknowledged for his highly persuasive oral skills that have accumulated in much success at EPO oppositions. David, who has been with HLK since 2007, was credited for being “commercially aware and proactively comments on commercial threats and opportunities.” At HLK, we work closely with our clients, devising and revising strategies at each stage, to ensure that we go above and beyond our clients’ needs.

While our team of highly skilled IP litigators were recognised, Richard Kempner, who heads up HLK’s Litigation team, was given special mention as being “recognised as one of the United Kingdom’s leading IP lawyers with over 30 years of experience in all aspects of contentious and non-contentious IP law”, and was commended for his ample experience in developing IP strategies for companies such as Netsweeper and Tesco.
