About Maisie

With a strong foundation in physics, Maisie has long had a keen interest in technological innovation and research development. Over the course of her academic career, this interest drew her to the challenges of patent law, with the opportunity to continue exploring cutting edge advancements at the forefront of the field.

Maisie joined HLK in 2025 as a trainee patent attorney in the Electronics and Communications team after graduating from the University of Bristol with an integrated Master of Physics with Study Abroad in a Modern Language. Her years in academia developed her technical expertise, both in theoretical and practical elements, with particular emphasis on application to current research problems.

During her studies abroad at La Universidad de Salamanca, she developed her technical Spanish language skills whilst being exposed to the theory of semiconductor and optical devices for the first time, sparking her interest in the intersection of the two in practical applications. She further explored her fascination with advanced technology through an internship in the cyber security sector, where she explored quantum computing, qubit development, and the major impact a functioning quantum computer would have on the field.

In her final year project, Maisie designed and constructed low-cost semiconductor laser systems for atomic cooling applications. This hands-on research left her with a greater appreciation for the intersection between the theoretical and practical elements of physics research.
